December 20th ACTION ALERT

Urgent! Contact Senator Isakson, immediately!
He MUST vote NO on the New START Treaty!

A cloture vote over the weekend ended debate on New START and a vote on the Treaty was scheduled for Tuesday December 21, 2010. Senator Johnny Isakson must be deluged with contacts from Georgians, asking him to vote AGAINST ratification!

Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson is among several key senators that favor ratification. He named Reagan’s support for the first START as his reason for supporting this one. However, New START is not a treaty Reagan would sign, since his mandatory “Trust, but verify,” is practically non-existent in this version.

  • The Preamble, a critical part of the Treaty, suggests that the U.S. would not develop new military technology to defend against nuclear weapons or convert rockets into interceptors.
  • Russia will have an enormous tactical nuclear warhead advantage.
  • The U.S. could not build a defense system, such as “Star Wars.”
  • New START prohibits the modernization of aging U.S. weapons.
  • There would be no such prohibitions on the Russians.
  • The treaty deals with only SOME of Russia’s nuclear threats and none of the world’s others, like China, North Korea, Iran and Venezuela.
  • The Treaty imposes limits on missile defense, despite the Administration’s denial.
  • Without an urgent need to monitor Russian compliance, we should follow Reagan’s, “trust but verify.” The ranking member of Senate Intelligence warned that it’s not verifiable.
  • Requiring the three newly seated Senators to vote on the Treaty during the lame-duck session will not allow them enough time to thoroughly research, THEN advise and consent.
  • Since New START will be executed on the watch of newly elected Senator, consideration should be deferred until they take office when new and balanced hearings can be held.

ACTION – Ask Senator Isakson to vote NO on the New START Treaty.

December 17th ACTION ALERT

S.2925 passed U.S. Senate December 9, 2010. This bill eliminates the crime of prostitution for offenders less than 18 years old. Therefore, pimps, massage parlors and the porn industry could recruit minors, exclusively.

Laws against prostitution are deterrents and should not be repealed.

S. 2925 decriminalizes prostitution for babies, adolescents or teens – anyone under 18. Is decriminalizing prostitution really in the best interest of children? S.2925 provides services to minors after they become prostitutes, but does not deter entrance into prostitution.

The better goal: Enforce the law as a means to discourage or prevent minors from becoming prostitutes.

Question: What are the proponents’ goal and rationale for repealing prostitution laws that apply to minors?

Answer: Money. Without laws against prostitution, minors cannot be charged with that offense. Therefore, under-age prostitutes can be deemed eligible for victim compensation that’s paid with our tax money.

Question: What is the impetus behind this bill?

Answer: Money. Agencies and others would be recipients of our tax dollars to pay for services to minors.

Question: Who are the true beneficiaries of decriminalized prostitution?

Answer: Pornographers, pimps, johns, massage parlors could fire 18-year-olds and hire younger minors.

Question: Which is the compassionate position – repeal laws and remove barriers to prostitution or discourage minors from choosing to participate in prostitution or the porn industry?

Answer: Compassion knows prostitution is a crime for all ages and enforces laws that prohibit participation.

The Money “Carrot” in S.2925–Byrne Grants would be awarded to states that have complied with S.2925 or will change their laws to

  • consider as victims of sex-trafficking everyone under age 18 who is charged with prostitution, including individuals who are not forced into that trade, but choose prostitution as a lifestyle.
  • repeal prostitution charges for anyone age 0 through 17 and use tax money to provide all their needs.
  • change victim compensation laws, so “victims” of sex trafficking are eligible for tax-funded services.

December 13th ALERT

Constitutional Convention, Too Dangerous to Consider

Although reasons for proposing it may seem noble, a Constitutional Convention (Con Con) would be DISASTROUS for the United States! But, incredibly, a Con Con is the fall-back plan of Republican legislators in Virginia, Utah, South Carolina, Indiana, Texas and Georgia. The plan: (a) Introduce “The Repeal Amendment” in Congress. (b) If it fails to pass, call a Con Con.

Language of The Repeal Amendment:

“Any provision of law or regulation of the United States may be repealed by the several states, and such repeal shall be effective when the legislatures of two-thirds of the several states approve resolutions for this purpose that particularly describe the same provision or provisions of law or regulation to be repealed.”

The Georgia connection is Senator Judson Hill, who announced plans to introduce a call for a Con Con in 2011. If he does so, he will be jumping to Plan (b) before Plan (a) is tried.

Current Status of Con Con
During the last several decades, 32 state legislatures passed Con Con resolutions, but since 1988 at least twelve states repealed their calls – Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Idaho, Utah, North Dakota, Arizona, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Wyoming and Oklahoma. Georgia’s calls for a Con Con were rescinded when the General Assembly passed H.R. 1343 in 2004.

Congressional Obligation
Congress must act if two-thirds (34) of the states pass a call for a Con Con. The problem: The Constitution of the United States, Article V authorizes a Con Con, but gives no directive for convening, deliberations or control. Critical uncertainties are revealed in a quick read of Article V (quoted below), if the myriad of questions it leaves unanswered are considered by the reader.

Major Unanswered Questions about a Con Con
Are rescinded calls valid? How many states participate? Will delegates be U.S. citizens? What is its locale and length? May the public participate? Who presides or writes rules; how many issues may be considered; could the Constitution be rewritten; could our representative republic be replaced with another form of government?

“The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the congress; Provided that no Amendment which may be made prior to the year One thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any Manner affect the first and fourth Clauses in the Ninth Section of the first Article; and that no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the Senate.”

December 7th ACTION ALERT

December 7, 2010, Anniversary of Japan’s Attack on Pearl Harbor

ACT today! Ask Senators to STOP Ratification
of New START Treaty

Georgia Senators Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson must heed the following message:

“Don’t let Obama and Harry Reid’s Lame-Duck Senate repudiate Ronald Reagan!  Reagan was a consistent stalwart booster of U.S. anti-missile defenses.  He won the Cold War by standing firm upon his plan to build an ABM.  Obama’s New START Treaty ties our hands against building anti-missile defenses to protect American lives from all the bad guys of the world.  The Lame Duck session absolutely must NOT ratify this dangerous treaty.”

– Phyllis Schlafly (1), Eagle Forum Founder and President

Talking Points:

  • A lame-duck session is not the place to decide on such a gravely important issue.
  • The treaty is not verifiable, says Senator Kit Bond, Intelligence Committee ranking member.
  • The Senate has never voted its consent on an arms control treaty in a lame-duck session.
  • Newly elected senators won’t be seated until January, but eleven of them asked to have “a say” in the New START ratification.  They cannot participate, if it’s considered before then.
  • The Senate never ratified SALT II, because over 34 senators opposed it.
  • The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty was rejected by a majority of senators.
  • The Senate must see the New START negotiating record BEFORE voting its consent.
  • Senators must not repeat the health care debacle and pass legislation without understanding it.
  • The Treaty leaves Russia with thousands more so-called “tactical” nuclear weapons – an inequality that could prove dangerous and destabilizing to allies.
  • Foreign Relations Committee hearings on New START were unbalanced and misleading.

ACTION – Ask Georgia’s U.S. Senators to defeat ratification of a New START Treaty.

(1) Eagle Forum President Phyllis Schlafly, contemporary and fellow patriot of President Ronald Reagan, joined him in battle during crisis after crisis and won vitally important victories to protect this country.  He would not sign an unverifiable treaty, such as New START, which is far too crucial for lame-duck politicians to decide.
