Walls & Monuments

Radio Commentary, 90.7, 91.7 New Life FM, March 21, 2014 – By Sue Ella Deadwyler

Good morning, Jim. A couple of weeks ago, a new wall, complete with a beautiful door were installed over a weekend on the first floor of the Capitol. It made a nice cozy nook for a speaker’s podium and enough space for the governor to have press conferences without the usual fanfare. Though it took a while to get accustomed to the change, the wall didn’t cause a fuss. BUT, that might not be the case when two other changes are made at the State Capitol.

The first day of the session, Representative Greg Morris introduced H.B. 702, that’s sure to make some people happy and others not-so-happy, depending on their religious persuasion. Thankfully, 138 representatives and 40 senators voted FOR the bill, with only 47 voting against it – ten in the Senate; 37 in the House; and the project it authorizes won’t cost taxpayers a dime. Burying the Death Tax

Radio Commentary, 90.7, 91.7 New Life FM, March 14, 2014 – By Sue Ella Deadwyler

Good morning, Jim. If you’re a baseball fan, you might know Yogi Berra played 19 years for the New York Yankees, played on 10 World Series Championship teams, is a Baseball Hall of Famer, one of the best catchers in baseball history and was voted to the Team of the Century in 1999, but I remember him for things he said, like, “When you get to a fork in the road, take it,” or “It’s like déjà vu all over again!” And that’s what I’m talking about today!

Earlier this week, I noticed a friend sitting in the hall of the capitol, waiting to see what will happen to the pro-life bill she’s working this session. It’s déjà vu all over again, because this happens to right-to-life lobbyists every year. They focus on saving unborn children, so you’d think their bills would sail right through, but they’re always delayed until the end of the session.

When S.B. 98 passed the Senate, it included this statement: “No health insurance plan shall offer coverage for abortion services except in the case of medical emergency.” Not only was that sentence deleted by the House Insurance Committee, the House affirmed rules and regulations that existed January 1, 2014, concerning insurance coverage for abortion services. U.S. & Georgia Law for Georgia

Radio Commentary, 90.7, 91.7 New Life FM, March 7, 2014 – By Sue Ella Deadwyler

Good morning, Jim. The sovereignty of the United States is dwindling every day, because multiculturalism is so far front-and -center that we’ve lost our focus and identity as a Judeo-Christian culture. Singing the national anthem is almost passé, very few people publicly pray in Jesus’ name and the American flag may be trampled or burned.

There’s unbelievable resistance at the State Capitol every time a bill is introduced to strengthen immigration laws or protect the sanctity of life, or honor marriage as the sacred union of a man and woman. Pressure is building for foreign law to be used in cases concerning people that come here from other countries. It’s so serious that, in the last four years, seven states have passed laws to prevent U.S. courts from using foreign law and Georgia legislators have tried to pass a similar law here. Tennessee, our neighbor to the north, was the first state to pass legislation banning foreign law in their state courts and last July North Carolina became the seventh.

In Georgia, Senator Tommie Williams introduced S.R. 808 that would change our state Constitution, so only U.S. law and Georgia law could be used in Georgia courts or for public acts and public records. His bill, also, says Georgia would not have to implement laws passed by other states, if they violate our state’s public policy. Continue reading

Steam Roller! Look Out!

Radio Commentary, 90.7, 91.7 New Life FM, March 1, 2014 – By Sue Ella Deadwyler

Good morning, Jim. Last year’s S.R. 371, calling for a constitutional convention, passed the Senate March 7, 2013 and the House February 20, 2014. So, it’s a done deal. HOWEVER, two other calls – S.R. 70 and S.R. 736 – have passed the Senate and are in the House. PLUS another call – H.R. 1215 – passed the House and is in the Senate. MEANING, a conference committee COULD be called to sort out the EXACT language these guys are looking for and THEN pass it out of committee using one of those bills as a vehicle, pass it and send it to Congress as Georgia’s call for an Article V convention. How about them apples???? The steamroller is in motion and it’s rolling in three vehicles!

During all this, I was called a “Nay-Sayer,” a name I wear proudly, because it means I’m against a constitutional convention and I’m in good company. In 2004 the entire General Assembly became Nay-Sayers by rescinding every call Georgia ever made for a constitutional convention. I, also, feel honored to be among Nay-Sayers, such as University of Maryland’s School of Law Professor Christopher Brown who said, “We already have three branches of government, why create [a fourth] ‘unknown power’ to do even more mischief?”

Then, Nay-Sayer Neil Cogan of the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, said, “My understanding of the Federal Convention is that … neither the Congress nor the States may limit the amendments to be considered and proposed … [T]he convention may be controlled in subject matter only by itself and by the people… through the ratification process.” Continue reading
