Israel

On January 15, 2014 the Georgia General Assembly adopted two senate resolutions supporting the Nation of Israel.

S.R. 741 by Senator John Albers expressed strong support and a steadfast commitment to the security, welfare, and survival of the Jewish State of Israel with secure borders and the right to protect itself against terrorism. It called for an end of attacks against Israel; for the recognition of Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish State; and for the U.N. to stop blaming Israel for defending itself. It encouraged Georgia lawmakers and citizens to give vigorous enduring support to the State of Israel.

S.R. 739 by Senator Judson Hill reached back into the Old Testament to affirm Israel’s right to occupy land deeded to the Jews “in the Old Testament … scripture held sacred and revered by Jews and Christians … as presenting the acts and words of God.”

S.R. 739 referenced the San Remo Resolution, unanimously adopted by the League of Nations in 1922 and affirmed by the U.S. Congress. It validated the national home for the Jews as the historical region of the Land of Israel, including the areas of Judea, Samaria, and Jerusalem, and the legitimacy of 650,000 Jews living there.

S.R. 739 reminds us that Israel declared its independence on May 14, 1948, reestablishing its God-given and legally recognized lands as a homeland for the Jewish people; that the U.S. was the first country to recognize Israel as an independent nation; and that Israel is the greatest friend and ally the U.S. has in the Middle East.

Georgia is proud to serve as home to the Israeli Consulate General for the Southeast, to be the home of over 45 Israeli companies that employ over 2,000 people; is proud to be home to chapters of the American Israel Chamber of Commerce, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the American Jewish Committee, the Anti-Defamation League, Hadassah, the Jewish Federation and the Jewish National Fund.

S.R. 739 ends with this statement: “The members of this body … support Israel in its legal, historical, moral, and God-given right of self-governance and self-defense upon the entirety of its own lands, recognizing that … peace can be afforded the region only through a whole and united Israel.”

Thank God for these resolutions and thank God for protecting Israel! For Georgia Insight I’m Sue Ella Deadwyler, your Capitol correspondent.
